Calligraphy of Few Characters
少字数作品, also known as “Calligraphy of Few Characters”. This type of calligraphy style comes with fewer words, with the majority being mottos. These words are commonly used and easily understood.
Below are some examples calligraphed by Su Demao.
Do take note that in Chinese Calligraphy, words are read from right to left.
Embrace the Moon to Cleanse the Heart
"Embracing the Moon" and "Cleanse the Heart" are two unrelated things. Here they are combined to create a work of art. Embracing the bright moon reflects one's clear heart, expressing the calligrapher's pure mind and pursuit of the ideal of seeking enlightenment.
Soaring Dragon, Rising Phoenix
Hanmo Zhiyun says: "Regular script is dignified, solemn, and well-structured, like a king wearing a crown and holding a sword standing in a temple. Cursive script is dynamic and beautiful, with powerful brushstrokes that are bold and unconstrained, like the soaring of dragons and phoenixes, and never losing its true essence." This statement is a metaphor for the dynamic beauty of cursive script, which is like the soaring of dragons and phoenixes, as exemplified by the wild cursive calligraphy of Zhang Xu and Huaisu.
Here, the calligraphic work is written using a style of "北碑" by Zhang Menglong and was dedicated to the student Zhou Meijun.
