Ancient Chinese poetry is divided into five-character and seven-character verses and typically features multiple lines.
Odd-numbered lines do not have to rhyme, while even-numbered lines must rhyme. While parallelism in poetry is not generally required, some ancient Chinese poems, particularly those in the form of songs or longer poetic forms, may have variations in the number of characters per line, but the arrangement of even and odd lines remain fixed, as seen in Li Bai's "Drinking Alone by Moonlight".
Further below are some examples calligraphed by Su Demao.
Do take note that in Chinese Calligraphy, words are read from right to left.
Don't you see the waters of the Yellow River, from the sky they come, Rushing towards the sea, never to return.
Don't you see the aged parents, gazing at their white hair in the mirror, Their once youthful locks now turned snowy white
When life is at its best, one should revel in joy and happiness, Don't let an empty cup spoil the beauty of the moon.
Heaven has given me talents, which will be utilized,
Even if my vast riches are all spent, they will return once again.
Let us cook sheep and slaughter cattle and make merry, Drinking three hundred cups of wine at one gathering!
Cen Fuzi and Dan Qiusheng, Drink up! Don't stop drinking!
I will sing a song for you, Please listen attentively:
Feasting with chiming bells and drum is not great enough, I only hope to remain drunk and never wake up.
Through the ages, sages and saints have lived in loneliness,
Only drinkers can pass on their good names
Once in banquets Chen Wang (Cao Zhi) held at Leping, ten thousand cups of wine, merrily setting themselves freely, making jokes and having fun to the fullest,
Host, no need to talk about the lack of money, just buy and let us drink.
A horse that travels a thousand miles, a fox fur coat worth a thousand pieces of gold, Quickly have the servant exchange them for fine wine,
Let us together dispel the sorrows of eternity!
Li Bai, "Drinking Alone Under the Moon"
The spring tide in the river connects with the sea. A bright moon rises from the sea as if surging out with the tide.
Moonlight shines on the spring river, which ripples for thousands of miles with the waves. Every part of the spring river is bathed in bright moonlight.
The winding river flows through fields of blooming flowers, and the moonlight illuminates the flower-lined forests like sparkling frost flakes.
The frost is imperceptible due to the moonlight, and the white sand on the island merges with the moonlight, making it indistinguishable.
The river water and the sky become the same color, without a speck of dust, and only a solitary moon hangs in the bright sky.
Who was the first to see the moon on the riverbank, and which year did the moon first shine on the people on the river?
Generations of people come and go endlessly, but the moon on the river remains similar year after year.
No one knows who the moon on the river is waiting for, but the Yangtze River continues to transport flowing water away.
The wandering traveler slowly departs like a white cloud, leaving only a sorrowful wife standing on the farewell green maple shore.
Whose traveler is sitting in a small boat drifting tonight, and where is someone longing on the moonlit building?
The pitiful moonlight constantly moving on the building shines on the dressing table of the distant lover.
Moonlight shines through the door curtain of the sorrowful wife, and will not be brushed away from her laundry board.
At this moment, we can only look at the moon together, unable to communicate. I hope to follow the moonlight and shine on you.
The wild geese fly incessantly but cannot fly out of the boundless moonlight. Fish and dragons leap and dive in the water, creating waves.
Last night I dreamed of flowers falling in a tranquil pool, but unfortunately, spring is already half over, and I still cannot go home.
The river flows, and spring coming to the end. The falling moon tilts to the west of the river once again.
The slanting moon slowly sinks into the sea fog, and the distance between the separated lovers of Jieshi and Xiaoxiang is infinitely far.
I wonder how many people can return home under the moonlight. Only the setting moonlight sways, sprinkling the tree-lined forests on the riverbank with the sorrow of parting.
