The format of a Chinese song lyric, known as a "Diao," has specific requirements for each song style. Different Diaos have different guidelines for the number of characters in each line. The number of characters for the pause in the middle of the line, as well as the balance of tones and parallelism, are also subject to certain rules. Typically, these rules are followed when composing songs, according to the established "cipu" or rhyme schemes.

This section includes examples of classical poetries (within 90 characters) calligraphed by Su Demao.

Do take note that in Chinese Calligraphy, words are read from right to left.

Before Mount Xisi, white egrets soar freely in the sky,

while plump loaches swim joyfully in the river, and the peach blossoms float along the current.

An old man on the riverbank wears a green bamboo coat and a green straw hat, leisurely fishing in gentle wind and drizzing rain,

Not bothered by the rain at all, he does not want to go home.

Zhang Zhihe, "The Fisherman"

Outside the post station by the broken bridge,

a lonely plum blossom bloomed in solitude, with no one to pay it any attention.

As night fell, the plum blossom was already sad enough, with no place to call home, but then it was also ravaged by wind and rain.

The plum blossom did not wish to exert itself to vie for attention, nor did it care about the jealousy and exclusion from the other flowers.

Even if it withered away, trampled into the earth, and turned into dust, the plum blossom would still emit its usual faint fragrance.

Lu You, Plum Blossoms

The sky is a bright blue, and the ground is covered in yellow leaves.

The autumn colors in the distance seem to blend with the rippling water, and the autumn mist on the water carries a hint of coolness.

The distant mountains are bathed in the sunset, and the sky meets the river.

The lush grass stretches all the way to the horizon beyond the sunset.

Silently missing my hometown, I feel melancholy and sorrowful. The haunting thoughts of being away from home are hard to dispel, and only sweet dreams can bring me to sleep at night.

Leaning alone on the high tower busking under the bright moon,

Drinking drops of liquor in hopes of comforting my sorrowful heart,

Instead, it turned into tears dripping into my yearning heart.

Fan Zhong Yan, “A Song of Autumn”

Where has spring gone?

I can't find any trace of it, only feeling lonely and depressed.

If someone knows where spring has gone,

please ask it to come back and stay with me.

No one knows where spring has gone,

so I went to ask the oriole.

Their hundred chirps are incomprehensible,

As they fly by, the wild roses on the wind.

Huang Tingjian, "Qingping Yue: Spring Returns, but Where?"
